Your photo stays local by default
Image Background Remover cuts the subject out of a photo and gives you a transparent PNG. The normal path runs on your device. If that result is not clean enough, you can choose Improve for one image; the extension explains the transfer and asks you to confirm before anything is sent.
What stays on your device
Your original image, file name and full-resolution result stay on your device. Local cut-outs and batch jobs do not upload images. Results are saved to disk.
The extension writes only these six keys in chrome.storage.local. None contains an image, pixels, a mask, thumbnail, file name, dimensions, EXIF, GPS or a processed-file list. Removing the extension deletes this storage.
| Key | What and why |
|---|---|
bgRemoverPrefs | Last output mode, flat colour and engine-fallback pin. UI settings only. |
improveInstallToken | 16 random bytes as 32 hex characters, so the server can count the 10/30-day allowance. Not an identity. Deleted on withdrawal. |
improveConsent | That you confirmed Improve, and which policy version you confirmed. No image content. Deleted on withdrawal. |
improveQuotaMirror | The last remaining-count and reset time the server reported, for the small label next to Improve. Editing it does not raise the allowance. |
weightsVerified | A local flag that the bundled weight file used by the active tier matched its pinned SHA-256 when it was first loaded (each tier's file is checked when that tier first runs); it is not a security, privacy or quality guarantee. No file name or image data. |
bgRemoverRatePrompt | At most three timestamps and one answer for the optional Rate us line. No file, no name, no person. |
What leaves your device, and only when
If you press Improve on one image and confirm, the extension makes a new JPEG copy from decoded pixels, limits its long side to 2,560 pixels and its size to 8 MiB, and POSTs that one copy to https://bg-remover-improve.kim-t-sh88.workers.dev for background segmentation. The original file and file name are not sent. The copy is without EXIF, GPS or ICC: re-encoding plus a byte-level strip removes those APPn segments. Improve is per photo — each row has its own button; there is no batch Improve. We do not store the uploaded image.
The free Improve allowance is 10 per install per 30 days, counted on the server from a 32-character random install token that travels with that request only to count the allowance and limit abuse. It is not made from your identity, email, device or files. The first Improve on an install shows a consent panel; Not now keeps everything local. Withdraw Improve consent in the workspace footer deletes the consent record and the token; the on-device path keeps working and the next Improve asks again.
Service provider
| Provider | Use and handling |
|---|---|
| Cloudflare, Inc. Workers, Images and Workers AI | Processes the consented copy and returns a PNG. We do not use the image to train models. Cloudflare states that Workers AI customer content is not used to train its models or improve its services, and is not shared with other customers. |
Retention and deletion
We do not store the uploaded image in our database, object storage or cache. Our service writes one request record containing the time, the first eight characters of the random token, byte size, outcome and duration—never the image, file name or IP address. Allowance counters expire after 40 days per install, 3 days for daily totals and 70 days for monthly totals.
Cloudflare processes the image to return the PNG. Cloudflare holds a transient edge cache for the response — minutes; not retained. No image is stored. Cloudflare logs request metadata such as IP address, browser information and timing under its own privacy policy.
Your choice and legal bases
Where GDPR or UK GDPR applies, processing is based on your consent and on performing the feature you requested. Choose Not now to keep everything local. You can withdraw consent in the workspace footer; this clears the consent record and install token, and Improve asks again next time.
International processing
Cloudflare handles the optional Improve copy and request metadata under its privacy terms. They may be processed outside your country. The default on-device path has no such transfer.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability or objection, withdraw consent, or complain to a supervisory authority. California residents may also ask to know, access, delete or correct personal information and will not be discriminated against for doing so. We do not sell or share personal information.
Security
Improve uses an HTTPS endpoint. The extension has no account, host permissions, analytics, advertising, tracking or behavioural profiling. It does not load processing code from the network.
Children
Image Background Remover is intended for people aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Limited Use
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date below will change. A change to the Improve data practice also makes the extension ask for consent again.
Feedback forms and Rate us
Two Google Forms, filled only if you choose to open them. They are not loaded in the background:
- Feedback (1–3 stars on Rate us): https://forms.gle/V1VTRiSXKqwngb357
- Uninstall reasons (opened by the browser after you remove the extension): https://forms.gle/n1nATNYaFsunrprL8
The Rate us line under a finished cut-out has two destinations: 1–3 stars open the feedback form above; 4–5 stars open the Chrome Web Store reviews page for this extension once the store item id exists. Until then a 4–5 star click does not open a tab.
